“ What do we know about Great Britain? “

  Мета : розвиток зв’язного мовлення;

                 Активізація вивченої лексики;

                 Розвиток навичок аудіювання;

                 Навчання роботи в групах;

                 Виховання поваги до іноземної культури.

 Обладнання: карта Великобританії, фотографії видатних

                               Місць Лондона, картки із запитаннями, плакати-

                               Презентації команд.

   Хід гри

 Teacher: Good afternoon, pupils! Today we are having an English party.

                  It will be a competition between four teams – the representatives

                  of four parts of Great Britain ( England, Scotland, Wales and

                  Northern Ireland ) and at the end of the competition will have the

                  Experts of Great Britain. Let’s start.

1.  Find the odd word is the first task.

                  team will answer two questions and get one point for each

                  correct answer.

            England

    England is the largest part of Great Britain, more than 46 million people   live there. Its symbol is a red rose and its capital is London.

    England is the heart of Britain. It is the richest and the most populated part of the country.

    England is mostly lowland country. The most important rivers are the Thames, the Severn and the Trent. In the North of the country there is the Lake District with many beautiful lakes.

            Scotland

   Scotland is the northern part of Great Britain, more than 5 million people live there. The capital of it is Edinburgh and the symbol of Scot-

Land is a thistle.

   There are many mountains in Scotland. The Highlands are among the oldest mountains in the world, their highest point is Ben Nevis. There are many rivers in Scotland but they are not long. The lake are called lochs. The most famous is Loch Ness  which is known for its monster.

   Scotland was an independent state but after the war it became the part of UK in 1707.

         Northern Ireland

   Northern Ireland is situated on the island of Ireland and has a popula-

Tion of about 1,5 million people. Its capital is a large port – Belfast and the symbol of the country is a shamrock.

   The Irish weather is very changeable, it often rains there. There is an old Irish saying : “ Ireland is the cleanest place in the world because God washes it every day”.

             Wales

   Wales is a small country, its population is about 3 million people. The capital of Wales is Cardiff and its symbol is a daffodil.

   Wales is a mountainous country with old hard rocks. It has two big busy ports of Liverpool and Bristol.

   Over 20% of people in Wales speak Welsh language. They are fond of music, singing, poetry and drama. The Welsh people are very proud of their country and they still wear their national dress on holidays.

   Wales has its own flag called the Welsh dragon.

4. The difficult questions

Teacher : Thank you, teams. You’ve read about these countries and you’ve

                  heard some new information about them. Now you see 12 cards

                  of different colours on the blackboard. There are questions there,

                  3 for each country. Red cards have questions about England,

                  green – Scotland, yellow – Wales, blue – Northern Ireland. If

                  you answer the question about your country you’ll get 1 point,

                 about other country – 2 points.

кобританію. Запитання про Англію мають червоний колір, про Шотландію – зелений, про Уельс – жовтий, про Ірландію – синій.

       Команди по черзі обирають запитання. Відповідь на запитання

5.London Tour

Teacher : Well done! Now let’s travel to the capital of Great Britain and go

                   sightseeing. You can see the pictures of the famous historical

                   places of London. Listen to the description of the place. Your

          task is to tell the number of the picture and to name the place. You’ll                                       

                 get one point for the correct answer.

Sights  of  London

1. Trafalgar Square – this place is in the centre of London. There is a monu-

                                           ment to Admiral Nelson and two fountains there.

2. The Houses of Parliament – this is the home of the British Government.

                                                      There are many towers on the building and there

                                                     Is the famous clock in one of them.

3. Big Ben – this is a famous clock named after Sir Benjamin Hall.

4. Westminster Abbey – this church is a symbol of English traditions and is

                                               more than 900 years old. Nearly all the kings and

                                               queens of Britain were crowned and buried there.

5. Buckingham Palace – it is the official residence of the royal family. It was

                                                 built in 1703 and has 600 rooms and 3 miles of a

                                                 red carpet.

6. St. Paul’s Cathedral – this church was built by a famous architect. It took

                                                him 35 years to built it. It is huge with a golden cross

                                                 and a bell on the top.

7. The Tower of London – it is one of the oldest buildings in London. It was

                                             founded in the 11^th century by William the Conqueror

                                             and is a museum now. There is the White Tower in the

                                             centre of it.

8. Tower Bridge – it is situated near the Tower of London. It is one of the most

                                   famous bridges in the city and first was opened in 1894.

 6. Agree or Disagree – now you’ll hear the statements about London. You

                                      are to say wether the information is true or false. You’ll

                                      get one point for each correct answer.

   8. British Holidays

        Teacher : Nice work! We’ve spoken about Great Britain and its consisting

                          parts, about the capital of the country. Let’s speak about British

                          traditions of celebrating different holidays. This task will be the

                          last in our competition. I have 4 envelopes and there are sym –

                          bols of 4 British holidays in them. Take turn and choose the task.

                          in 5 minutes you are to represent the holiday which symbol you

                          have. You may use pencils and felt-pens.
